“Sums” is the 4th collection of song material by multimedia psychedelic collage artist Jib Kidder. Written and recorded before and after, but not during, the period in which the artist attempted and ultimately failed to preserve the life of friend and collaborator Ben Lawless (who tragically took his own life earlier this year), “Sums” draws less influence from that event itself than from the Marrabenta & Kadongo Kamu musics (of Mozambique and Uganda, respectively) that taught him the formal secrets of opposing horror with hope.

Combining the melodic exuberance of Lindsey Buckingham with the contrarian freeplay of tape-era Yximalloo, the succinct “Sums” features 10 songs that attempt to joyfully stab the listener where it matters most. To the horror of hopeful almost-fans, the pro-human / anti-tech themes of “Pay 2 Play” are here furthered, the songs do not have bridges and their endings emulate the rug-pulled-out-from-under-you quality of death but for those familiar or open to SSC’s singular approach many small fruits await.
